COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A survey course designed to increase the RN student’s awareness and understanding of the changes occurring in professional nursing practice and concepts that influence delivery of nursing care. The philosophy and conceptual framework of the Nursing Curriculum at North Georgia College and State University which is based on the Great Eight concepts provide the structure for the course content. The Great Eight concepts include: health promotion/disease prevention; communication; analytical, contextual and holistic thinking; human caring and relationships; teaching; resource management; leadership, and information literacy. Course content focuses on socialization into the role of the professional nurse, nursing theory, written and oral communication and ethics in healthcare practice. Critical thinking is used to examine nursing theorists/theories and the application of theory to practice.

DEPARTMENT OF NURSING
NURSING 3110
Please select a nursing theorist from your textbook or other source that is interesting to you and that you wish to study more in-depth. Please note that it must be a nursing theorist – Maslow is not a nursing theorist (although he is used heavily in nursing). You may use your textbooks and other resources to gather your material. There are many websites available on nursing theorists and books in the library. You may also order materials via Interlibrary Loan at our NGCSU library. The Reference Desk is willing to assist you with your needs. Apply this theory to a client situation and analyze the situation according to the theory, describing the four concepts studied in nursing – client, environment, health and nursing/care. Please let your faculty member know who you select.
Grading Criteria

C. Application
What did you learn from this issue/dilemma? How can this be applied to other areas of practice? Would you have done anything differently?
Be prepared to present briefly in class on designated date for ethical defense.
You are required to turn in three (3) bibliography cards on outside reading during the semester. Select an article from a nursing journal, a website, or newspaper that pertains to the content of this course such as an article that discusses use of a nursing theorist, an article that describes an ethical dilemma, one that describes clinical competence, licensure, nursing shortage, health care economics or any issue in nursing today.
Read and critique/analyze the article and complete the following components on your summary sheet. Due dates for summaries are on the calendar. The summaries may be e-mailed to instructor, faxed to me, or handed in during class.

There are many issues in nursing today. A suitable subject for your paper and presentation may be social, political, educational, economic, psychological, or cultural in nature and related to nursing and health care today. Think about what concerns you most about your work, nursing, and health care. Select an issue that you would like to examine in greater depth. Your frame of reference should be professional and may be local or international in scope. Research your issue in nursing journals. Articles should be peer-reviewed and of professional standards and appropriate websites for referencing.
An issue
is a matter about which intelligent, informed people disagree. An issue often generates strong emotional
responses among people who hold different points of view. Take a stand in the issue that you study – for
or against. Every student will choose a
different topic. Please let the faculty know your topic for approval (1st
come, 1st serve) to make sure that the topics are not being
duplicated. The only time that a topic
can be chosen by two students is if one student takes the “yes” side and
another takes the “no” side creating an informal debate.
The
topic chosen for your Issues paper is also the topic for your presentation. A
date will be assigned to you for your presentation.
Express your issue in writing (or in your presentation). By externalizing it, you can further examine, clarify, and refine your wording. Express the issue in the “Is…?” “Does…?” or “Should …?” form. The issue can be answered by a yes or no (for example, Should nurses be required to have continuing education credits for re-licensure? – yes or no? Or Do 12-hour shift work schedules contribute to medication errors? – yes or no? ) You take a stand on the affirmative or negative and support your position.
Distinguish between the central issue and peripheral issues.
Define the key terms and concepts.
Describe the context of your issue.
Identify your assumptions. What are you taking for granted?
Develop
your issue – what is the issue and why is it an issue?
To resolve the issue means to choose a conclusion, belief, or point of view that you believe to be the most reasonable in response to your issue.
Construct your reasons and determine how you will present them to lead to your conclusion.
Support your reasons with relevant data, evidence, experience, and other information.
Acknowledge alternative points of view and prepare a defense for each anticipated objection.
Applications
Discuss the Implications of your position and how this issue relates with nursing. What positive and negative consequences might result?
A reference list is required. Use the APA format.
A minimum of 3 references must be used that are appropriate and current (no more than 5 years old for journals).
This issue paper is 30% of your final grade for the course. Paper must be typed, double-spaced. A cover page and abstract are expected to be included. Grading criteria is as follows:
Issue clarification 10%
Issue development 20%
Reasons and Conclusions 30%
Implications 20%
Style, readability, clarity, 20%
spelling, punctuation, APA,
appropriate references
The paper should be no more than 10 pages in length. A cover page and abstract are expected to be included.
A quality presentation includes: 20 minutes in length
1. References – cited in a handout or on a slide
2. Adequate research
3. NO READING of material
4. Involvement of audience
5. Audiovisuals – use of PowerPoint
6. Organization of thoughts, nice flow to the presentation
7. Good presentation skills watching mannerisms – “um”, “ah”, “you know”, flipping hair, twisting jewelry, etc.
8. Follow criteria on evaluation form
9. Proper dress and appearance – jeans, t-shirts, flip flops are not professional
